Your Puppy or Kitten’s First Vet Visit: A Simple Preparation Guide

A new puppy or kitten brings plenty of excitement—and plenty of questions. The first veterinary visit is a chance to turn scattered advice into a care plan that fits your pet. A little preparation helps you use the appointment well, especially when you are still learning what is normal for your newest family member.

Gather the story so far

Bring adoption or breeder records, previous vaccination details, prescriptions and any test results. If the history is unknown, say so rather than guessing dates. Write down your pet’s approximate age, when they came home, and anything that has changed since then. Ask the clinic whether a fresh stool sample is needed.

Make the journey familiar

For a kitten, leave the carrier open at home with familiar bedding so it becomes an ordinary resting place. Keep dogs securely restrained during travel and use an appropriate carrier for cats. Brief, positive handling practice can help prepare a pet for examination; stop if they become frightened and tell the clinic about difficult handling or travel.

Bring a short question list

  • Which vaccines and parasite prevention does my pet need next?
  • What food and feeding routine suit their age and current condition?
  • What should I watch for while they settle into our home?
  • When should we discuss neutering, dental care and follow-up visits?

Keep a useful appointment note

Create one note on your phone called “Pet care plan”. Add the next appointment, the exact product names prescribed, and the clinic’s instructions. Before leaving, read the plan back in your own words. For example: “This is the next due date, and this is who I should contact if I have a concern.” That simple habit is easier to maintain than searching through separate messages later.

Do not wait if your new pet seems unwell

A young pet that is not eating, has diarrhoea or seems unusually quiet needs a prompt conversation with a veterinarian. Mention symptoms when booking so the clinic can advise you about urgency.
